activities

It is impossible to give a comprehensive account on this small website of all the things there are to do around here. The mountains of the Pyrenees provide for summer and winter activity holiday, and there are many easily accessible places of interest to visit.

Our best suggestion for anyone considering a holiday is to visit www.ariege.com. This  website is very well put together and has all the information about everything available in the area and includes an english version for those whose french is a little rusty.

All the places of interest and activities listed on the Ariège website are easily accessible by short car journey. On the other hand, for those who prefer not to use the car, it is quite possible to explore the mountains on foot straight from the village. For those who only want a short stroll from Biert, there is a pretty (and flat!) route along the river to our neighbouring village of  Massat, where you will find a few shops and two bars.
We have local maps and footpath information and can provide translations from the french if you need them. We are happy to find out more about particular events or activites which interest you, and we can organise things in advance if you wish .

Because the climate changes so much from winter to summer, the activities vary accordingly. For example, in the summer you can enjoy walking, hiking, kayaking, canoeing, rock climbing, fishing, wildlife watching, cycling, mountain biking, tennis. Places of interest to visit include prehistoric caves and castles.

In our opinion the spring and autumn are best for walking holidays, as July and August can be pretty hot. Although of course for those who prefer to venture to the higher peaks, summer is preferable as there is still snow up there until late spring. Winter is spectacular and we  have included a separate page with information and advice for those thinking of visiting for the snow.
