winter holidays

The mountains are beautiful in winter. There are plenty of ways to enjoy the snow depending on how active and adventurous you want to be.

You don't need to be a skier to get around in the snow, as you can use snow-shoes ('raquettes à neige') which enable easy walking and allow you to get to places inaccessible by any other means. And of course, sledging is always good fun.

At 600 metres, we have varying amounts of snow in the village, although not much higher than here there is guaranteed snow between December and March.

One of the things we have noticed is that the sheltered nature of the area prevents the 'wind chill' factor, so that in warm winter clothing, you feel cosy and comfortable. The quality of the sunlight is amazing in winter and the sky is often so blue it becomes almost purple. The sun can be very warm, even hot, despite snow all around.
winter sports

For those who are interested in winter sports, we have two ski stations nearby. The first (about 20 minutes drive) is Etang de Lers, which provides prepared pistes for cross country skiing, sledging and snoe shoe walking. All equipment can be hired.

A little further away (about 40 minutes drive) is Guzet Neige, a ski station with plenty of ski lifts and pistes for downhill skiing and snow boarding. There is a selection of bars and restaurants and several equipment hire shops. There is a comprehensive website  www.guzet.com  and you can contact us if you want more information.

If you don't mind a slightly longer drive, we have the larger ski station of Ax-les-Thermes
car travel in winter

The roads are quickly and efficiently cleared after a snow fall - in fact the ploughs pass up and down several times a day. The village is always accessible by road, as are the ski stations, although you would be wise to hire snow chains along with the car,  just in case. From time to time some of the higher mountain passes are closed, but this should pose no problems in getting around.
